MCNERNEY CHALLENGES POMBO TO WEEKLY DEBATES

Behind in the polls, Republican Congressman cuts and runs from community forums

"DUBLIN, CA – Jerry McNerney, Democratic nominee for California's 11th Congressional District, today challenged Congressman Richard Pombo to weekly debates. Pombo has repeatedly refused to debate McNerney at forums proposed by the American Association of Retired Persons, the Commonwealth Club, and the League of Women Voters. McNerney is committed to providing people the opportunity to compare the candidates in their community.

"It's not yet Halloween, but Richard Pombo is already behaving like a ghost," said Jerry McNerney. "He won't debate in Dublin. He won't debate in Danville. He won't debate in Stockton or Morgan Hill. I know Pombo attends events sponsored by corporate lobbyists and President Bush, but I don't know who he thinks he represents. The oil companies and Washington lobbyists who fund Pombo's negative campaign want complex favors. The taxpayers who pay his salary just want simple answers. Is that too much to ask?"
